Arlene Bishop first stepped onto a stage in 1989, prompted by the sudden loss of her partner Roger Rainbow, although she had been born years earlier in Churchill, Manitoba. Colin Linden’s encouragement led her to play clubs throughout the Toronto area, where she steadily built a devoted audience and drew strong approval from listeners and reviewers. Her debut EP, Pinky, appeared in 1996, followed in 2001 by the full-length Snarky Girlpop. Across North America her songs receive regular airplay on public radio and have been discussed in the same breath as such Canadian rock fixtures as Neil Young and Joni Mitchell. Onstage she favors a darkly comic tone, often accentuated by the eccentric remarks she delivers between numbers.
