It took roughly four years after any of the members had issued new material with their prior groups before Army of Anyone began attracting notice. The lineup united Filter vocalist Richard Patrick with brothers Dean DeLeo and Robert DeLeo, both formerly of Stone Temple Pilots, plus Ray Luzier, a veteran session and touring drummer whose tenure alongside David Lee Roth lasted from 1997 to 2005. Bob Ezrin, the producer behind Pink Floyd’s The Wall and several early Alice Cooper hits, helmed the self-titled debut, which surfaced in November 2006 behind the lead single “Goodbye.” As the first release on Firm Music—an imprint operated by the band’s management company, The Firm—the album bypassed standard label arrangements so that managers could oversee distribution directly and thereby deliver higher royalty shares to the artists.
