Named after the Greek goddess of hunting, Artemis operates as an all-women jazz collective celebrated for its deeply sophisticated and adroit post-bop jazz. The ensemble first appeared in 2020 via the self-titled Artemis and returned three years later with In Real Time.

Artemis originated in 2017 under the leadership of pianist and musical director Renee Rosnes, with its initial roster comprising tenor trumpeter Ingrid Jensen, saxophonist Melissa Aldana, clarinetist Anat Cohen, bassist Noriko Ueda, drummer Allison Miller, and vocalist Cécile McLorin Salvant. Rosnes convened the musicians specifically for a European tour intended to highlight and extend each player’s individual strengths. After earning strong responses for appearances at Carnegie Hall and the 2018 Newport Jazz Festival, the collective issued its debut album, Artemis, through Blue Note Records. The group resurfaced in 2023 with the follow-up In Real Time, which retained Rosnes, Jensen, Ueda, and Miller while adding tenor saxophonist Nicole Glover and multi-reedist Alexa Tarantino. In addition to further original material, the record presented the ensemble’s interpretation of the classic Wayne Shorter composition “Penelope.”
