Biography
Formed in 1971, the British ensemble took shape under the direction of the unconventional Arthur Brown (b. Arthur Wilton-Brown, 24 June 1944, Whitby, Yorkshire, England), whose earlier single “Fire” had brought him brief chart success three years prior. Guitarist Andrew Dalby (b. Gainsborough, England), synthesizer player Julian Paul Brown (b. Liverpool, England), keyboardist Michael Harris, bassist Desmond Fisher and drummer Martin Steer completed the roster, a configuration later captured on screen in Glastonbury Fayre. Their opening release, Galactic Zoo Dossier, delivered an audacious, exploratory collection that incorporated an elongated reading of “Space Plucks,” material the singer had originally composed with organist Vincent Crane during his preceding group. The same level of invention proved elusive on the follow-up Kingdom Come, which leaned instead on prevailing progressive mannerisms and introduced replacement bassist Phil Shutt. Harris and Steer departed ahead of Journey, leaving Brown, Dalby and Shutt to record with keyboardist Victor Peraino and a drum machine. The project dissolved entirely once its founder pursued an unpredictable path as a solo artist.
