Born in Germany in 1955 under the name Ronald Hoth, Aschera developed skills on guitar, keyboards, and saxophone while also establishing himself as a composer. During childhood he first picked up the guitar, and later, as an adult, he took on roles as a bandleader and music instructor before opening his own school for musical study.

For an extended period he kept any professional ambitions on hold, easing into performance through occasional club appearances. Work on his distinctive debut solo project, Whales of Atlantis, began in 1995; the following year he assembled a touring ensemble and BSC Music issued the instrumental guitar album of the same name. Among its tranquil selections were the tracks “Tenderness,” “Time of Dreams,” “Sleep Well,” and “Way of Hearts.”

Frequent concert dates and television performances followed over subsequent years, during which Aschera collaborated with artists including Bonnie Tyler, Jonny Hill, Chris Norman, Dirk Busch, and Howard Carpendale. He completed his second album, Return of the Angels, in 2000 and immediately turned to recording the vocal collection Love Is the Answer.
