Considering that Tortoise and the Sea and Cake represent post-rock, Ashby stands as a post-pop counterpart. Boston supplies the base for this duo of multi-instrumentalists, with Evelyn Pope supplying vocals and songwriting alongside William Cowie’s production work. Their sound fuses electronica experiments with pure pop in a fashion that suggests a hypothetical Mouse on Mars and Cardigans partnership. Marina Records, the German indie label, issued the pair’s debut album—facetiously titled Power Ballads—in October 2001.
