Biography
Just as Ani DiFranco drew notice to Buffalo, Ashley Cox has contributed to the growth of Syracuse's music community in New York. Honored with a Syracuse Area Music Award as Best New Artist of 1997, she found ready acceptance among women's music enthusiasts.
Her father's records by King Crimson, Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Fripp & Eno, the Police, the Roches, the Beatles, and Peter Gabriel shaped her early listening, and she developed her skills busking on the street and at open mics in local folk coffeehouses.
After relocating to North Carolina in the early '90s, she began appearing often at Catawba College in Salisbury; as awareness of her abilities grew, she secured regular weekly performances in both Charlotte and Wilmington.
Upon her return to Syracuse, Cox has drawn increasing local attention through her gutsy, multi-octave vocals. In spring 2000 she issued her first album, As Above So Below, on her independent Ladybug label. She has also collaborated in the studio with the Syracuse-based alternative rock band the Fun Lovin' Criminals.
