Biography
During 2019, Black Mirror brought its fifth season to a close with the episode "Rachel, Jack and Ashley Too," in which Miley Cyrus played the central fictional pop star Ashley O. The part differed sharply from Cyrus' earlier wholesome television character Hannah Montana, instead adopting the futuristic synth-heavy pop approach associated with Charli XCX, Lady Gaga, Poppy, Ava Max, and Allie X. For the episode's songs, the series turned to industrial metal mainstays Nine Inch Nails after obtaining approval from Trent Reznor. The 1989 Pretty Hate Machine single "Head Like a Hole" was reworked into the biting motivational parody "On a Roll." The With Teeth downer "Right Where It Belongs" surfaced in a pivotal scene for Cyrus' character and was recast as the jarring empowerment anthem "Right Where I Belong." Although the story revealed the harsh reality behind the manufactured pop surface, the official Ashley O singles crossed into actual meta pop success for Cyrus while presenting Nine Inch Nails to an unexpected pop-loving audience.
