Ady Gordon, the noisemaker from Shapeshifter Legacy, launched Astro Boy as his solo outlet while remaining unaware that a 1970s Japanese cartoon series already bore the identical title. He assembled layers of experimental sound by routing synthesizers, drum machines, tape loops, Commodore 64 signals, and a Speak and Spell through a four-track recorder, eventually producing multiple demo collections. Ennui Tapes subsequently issued two albums—Hex in 1999 and In the Ghost of Your Mind in 2000—before Belgium-based Morc Records released the 2001 EP Innocent Tears.
