Japanese girl group Atarashii Gakko! fuse J-pop and J-rock through an irreverent, off-kilter lens shaped by their incisive, convention-defying outlook. The quartet came together in 2017 and notched an instant domestic success via their Top 100 debut single "Dokubana," a gritty rock-driven number whose B-side "Wakaranai" highlighted their rhythmic pop leanings. They followed with consistent releases, among them the charting tracks "Kimiwaina'17" from their 2018 debut album Maenarawanai and "Ookami no Uta" from 2019's Wakage Gaitaru. As international interest expanded, 88rising signed them in 2021, issuing "Nainainai" and the propulsive 2023 cut "Tokyo Calling" ahead of the 2024 album AG! Calling.

Directly confronting Japanese social expectations, the four members—known fully as Atarashii Gakkou no Leaders ("New School Leaders")—champion personal expression and autonomy while rejecting both stylistic boundaries and standard industry practices. Outfitted in school uniforms, kawaii aesthetics, and distinct personas, Mizyu, Rin, Suzuka, and Kanon discard conventional girl-group formulas by crafting their own vigorous choreography and blending rock, pop, and occasional jazz. Their 2017 debut single "Dokubana" quickly gained traction, peaking at number 84 on the Japanese chart and appearing on the March 2018 full-length Maenarawanai. The follow-up album Wakage Gaitaru arrived in 2019, with "Ookami no Uta" reaching number 142. The funky 2020 track "Otonablue" emerged as one of their biggest streaming successes, joined later by singles such as "Que Sera Sera" and "Koibumi."

After joining 88rising in 2021, they marked the partnership with "Nainainai," then teamed with labelmate Warren Hue on the electronic dance number "Freaks" and dropped their debut EP Snacktime later that year. The 2023 EPs Ichijikikoku and Maningen both entered the Top Ten on the Japanese album chart. An international tour featuring U.S. shows closed out the year alongside the single "Tokyo Calling." Their third album, AG! Calling, followed in June 2024, preceded by "Fly High," while the song "Hello" appeared on the soundtrack for the animated feature The Tiger's Apprentice.
