Atlantis Black grew up amid the woodlands of Pennsylvania and only considered entering the music business upon encountering PJ Harvey's work. The British artist's gothic indie rock style and intensely personal delivery captivated her, prompting a journey that included time in New Orleans prior to purchasing a guitar and relocating to Los Angeles. After composing material for more than twelve months within her living space, she returned to Pennsylvania to complete her education and subsequently traveled toward the Atlantic seaboard. Upon settling in New York City, she performed unaccompanied acoustic numbers in venues throughout the East Village. Positive reactions to her intense and fervent songs encouraged her to alternate between acoustic and electric performances in progressively larger city nightspots. In 2001, she assembled and self-released her initial EP, distributing copies in limited quantities through neighborhood music stores and during live appearances. To support her endeavors, she maintained employment as a cartographer, with her following release aiming for broader distribution. Following her performance at that year's CMJ Music Marathon, recording commenced on a subsequent EP. Issued the year after, In My Bed represented the singer/songwriter's next body of work.
