Biography
Atoll stood as France’s counterpart to the progressive rock outfits Yes and Genesis. The ensemble tracked four albums across the middle and later years of the 1970s, its roster reaching a settled configuration only with the arrival of the second LP. That 1975 release, L’Araignee Mal, featured vocalist and percussionist André Balzer alongside guitarist Christian Beya, bassist Jean-Luc Thillot, keyboardist Michel Taillet, and drummer Alain Gozzo. From its third album onward—beginning with Tertio—the group steadily steered its music toward a more commercial direction, issuing just one additional studio effort and a compilation before disbanding. A fresh, pop-focused incarnation surfaced in the late 1980s, however, retaining only Beya from the earlier roster; this lineup put out both the studio album L’Ocean and the live set Tokyo C’est Fini in 1989.
