Atomsmashers fuse grindcore, metal, digital hardcore, computer-based editing, and raw noise into a daring, innovative strain of extreme music. The trio’s singular approach becomes clearer when tracing the varied paths of its participants. James Plotkin, who handles guitar, bass, and leadership duties, first gained notice directing the experimental Earache metal outfit Old and through shadowy ambient projects alongside Mick Harris and K.K. Null. Dave Witte built a strong profile as a precision grindcore and metal drummer via stints in Discordance Axis, Human Remains, Burnt By the Sun, and additional groups. Speedranch drew notice for his aggressive, noise-infused electronica work created with Jansky Noise and Venetian Snares. Although Plotkin and Witte reside in New Jersey while Speedranch lives in Manchester, England, the musicians adopted unusual methods to complete their debut album. Plotkin reworked Witte’s pre-recorded drum tracks, layered on bass and guitar, then integrated Speedranch’s heavily treated vocals, which had arrived from overseas on a CD-ROM. Double H Noise Industries—an experimental offshoot of Hydrahead Records—issued the self-titled record in mid-2001. Just prior to its appearance, the group revealed they had signed with Ipecac Records, the imprint headed by Mr. Bungle and Fantomas frontman Mike Patton, for their next full-length effort.
