Biography
Swede Simon Heath's dark ambient endeavor Atrium Carceri stands among the genre's most distinctive acts, thanks to its finely detailed atmospheric constructions and an expansive, immersive mythology that has carried the project across a dozen releases spanning fifteen years. Born in Stockholm in 1977, Heath began capturing field recordings during childhood, fashioning looped sonic environments that filled his bedroom. As a teenager he started producing what would later be recognized as dark ambient music, well before he encountered the label itself. Once he realized he belonged to an existing community, he joined fellow Swedes Donald Persson and Simon Kölle in 2000 to establish Za Frûmi, a darkwave/neofolk outfit drawing inspiration from Tolkien's orcs. That project issued three principal albums alongside four instrumental "Legends" releases and generated the offshoots Abnocto, devoted to medieval dark ambient, and Knaprika, oriented toward psytrance. Atrium Carceri's first album, Cellblock, appeared in 2003 on the dark ambient and industrial imprint Cold Meat Industry. Within a landscape previously dominated by industrial aesthetics, Heath's cinematic approach, built extensively on field recordings, arrived as a striking departure. Six further Atrium Carceri albums followed on Cold Meat Industry until the label folded in 2011. Each meticulously assembled, deeply isolating soundscape incorporated "psychological observation of test listeners," while successive liner notes advanced chapters of a larger narrative kept intentionally open-ended so listeners could form their own readings; the tale appeared to concern the last vestiges of humanity held captive by Lovecraftian elders inside a desolate, post-apocalyptic world. Following the label's demise, Heath moved to Oregon and founded Cryo Chamber, a collaborative venture that rapidly emerged as one of the scene's foremost imprints, issuing numerous strong recordings by artists from varied international locales. By 2018 he had placed five additional Atrium Carceri solo albums on the roster together with several joint projects. Separate output included the sci-fi-oriented, soundtrack-style work issued as Sabled Sun and the downtempo and chillout material released under the name Krusseldorf. He concluded the decade with two further Atrium Carceri solo efforts, Codex in 2018 and Black Stage of Night in 2019.
