Listen on Coda
Born in 1976 near Cleveland, OH, Aubrey Ashburn developed her skills through choir participation, private vocal instruction, and violin study, traits that positioned her as an ideal candidate for Juilliard. She obtained a scholarship to the renowned conservatory in 1994, only to have her demo tape turned down. Discouraged by the outcome, she relocated to San Diego and began flight training toward her private pilot’s license. Music drew her back in 1996 after her father, himself a singer and songwriter, consented to fund a new recording. A series of unplanned meetings brought longtime industry-connected producer Jerry Merrill into the project; he oversaw the sessions for her debut album and handled its A&R responsibilities. Sleeping Virtue was issued on the Gaston imprint in spring 2003. The understated blend of AAA pop, cabaret, and blues earned notice for echoing the mature songwriting of artists such as Sarah McLachlan.
