Au.Ra, a dreamy duo divided between London and Sydney, consists of multi-instrumentalists Tom Crandles and Tim Jenkins, each a mainstay in Australia's indie rock community throughout the early 2010s. Jenkins had previously belonged to Parades and Crandles to Ghostwood; once those bands dissolved, the two began collaborating on music by layering improvisations across loops and drones that contrasted sharply with the strummy indie of their earlier work. Their initial output surfaced in 2012 when the single "Sun" emerged that December, after which Au.Ra spent the following two years assembling tracks for their first album, Jane's Lament. Following singles such as "Spare the Thought" and "Talk Show," the full-length—additionally engineered by the Griswolds' Simon Todkill and mixed by HTRK's Nigel Yang—reached listeners in March 2015 on Felte Records. Crandles and Jenkins drew from dub, synth pop, and the work of David Sylvian and Ryuichi Sakamoto while shaping their next project, which surfaced as Cultivations on Felte in June 2017.
