Brooklyn electro rock outfit Automatic Duo consists of Chance Drzewucki, Matt Walsh, David Andrew Moore, and a custom-built synthesized device that Walsh operates under the name "the monster." Vocalist Drzewucki labels the contraption "the blip bitch," describing it as an interconnected array of samplers, microphones, and pedals linked through cables and cords, which Walsh employs to record and repeat guitar parts, drum patterns, and assorted toy instruments. Marketed as an indie electronic act—an apt encapsulation of the group’s approach—the quartet began attracting audiences and building anticipation through expansive sonic textures and a genre-shifting unpredictability reminiscent of an iPod on shuffle. After witnessing a compelling N.Y.C. performance, Hotel Records offered Automatic Duo a deal, resulting in the release of their debut EP, Ai Neh Mah, and the subsequent arrival of their first full-length album, Fake History for Outlandish Times, in 2008.
