Biography
The Carioca duo of vocalist Gabriela Geluda and bassist Mauro Berman, previously of Coma and Planet Hemp, relocated to London, England, during the mid-1990s. There they performed regularly in bars before assembling Auwê in 1999 alongside Brazilian guitarist Luís de Almeida, who handled both electric and acoustic instruments, and English keyboardist Mark Hinton Stewart. At the heart of the ensemble’s style lie understated echoes of Brazilian traditions, including lyrics in Brazilian Portuguese along with baião rhythms and influences drawn from music of Minas Gerais. This foundation blends with a lyrical progressive approach akin to Renaissance, incorporating New Age textures and subtle traces of Indian music within an overarching pop/folk framework. While based in London, Auwê served as opening act for Marisa Monte and Caetano Veloso and appeared alongside Bebel Gilberto at the Braziliance Festival.
