Auxes emerged from the vision of Dave Laney, previously at the helm of the acclaimed indie rock outfits Milemarker and Challenger, with its sound defined by robust yet tuneful guitar lines and rugged, emphatic singing. Following the conclusion of Milemarker’s tour behind Ominosity in 2006, personal family obligations prompted Laney to move from Chicago to his native area near Chapel Hill, NC. Reconnecting with associates and peers in that vibrant local scene inspired him to compose fresh material and pursue recording opportunities. Because many of his prior collaborators remained occupied with commitments to their own groups—including Sleepytime Trio, Bellafea, Fing Fang Foom, and Eagle Bravo—he tracked the majority of an album single-handedly, electing to release the work under the band moniker Auxes rather than as a solo effort. Early in 2008 Laney entered the studio alongside producer Brian Paulson, yielding the debut Auxes full-length, Sunshine. The project was succeeded by the five-song EP Meow!, which paired Laney’s guitar and vocals with bassist Pete Wagner, drummer John Crouch, and backing vocalist Tara Grayson; issued in limited quantities, the EP was sold exclusively during the band’s inaugural tour. Since Sunshine’s appearance, Auxes have performed across the United States and Europe, with Laney assembling a rotating cast of supporting players that has included Wagner, Crouch, Ben Davis, Adam Kish, Noah Leger, and Mike Triplett.
