Biography
The pairing of Texas roots with European-flavored black metal may appear improbable, yet the state's harsh conditions sustain a restless underground rich in extreme metal activity. Out of Austin emerged Averse Sefira, who parlayed their improbable origins into substantial accomplishments by gaining traction within European circles and sparking notable interest throughout South America, which led the band to incorporate a Portuguese-language area on its website. Guitarist and vocalist Sanguine Mapsama and bassist Wrath Sathariel Diabolus launched the group in 1996. They completed the demo Blasphomet Sin Abset, issued later that year and later reissued by Evil Horde in 2003. Initially without a drummer, the band employed a drum machine through its early phase while maintaining a strict “true” black metal path reminiscent of the initial recordings by Mayhem and Gorgoroth. Their debut album Homecoming's March appeared in 1999 on the group's own Arrogare label. Live drumming entered the picture in 2001 with the addition of The Carcass on the kit, first heard on the second album Battle's Clarion. That release moved beyond pure black metal into a death-oriented direction, shaping the Texas unit’s sound into a more evolved hybrid. In the following years the band issued several EPs and undertook international tours with genre figures such as Dark Funeral and newer acts like Watain. The third album, Tetragrammatical Astymata, surfaced in 2005 and further refined their distinctive death/black metal blend. Averse Sefira returned in 2008 with Advent Parallax, issued on the respected extreme metal imprint Candlelight.
