Biography
Avery Sharpe has earned acclaim as a bassist through his enduring work alongside McCoy Tyner’s trio. He began on piano at age eight and also took up the accordion before turning to electric bass and later switching to its acoustic counterpart. While attending the University of Massachusetts he studied under Reggie Workman and performed in groups led by Wynton Marsalis and Pat Metheny. Sharpe first joined McCoy Tyner during the pianist’s early-’80s sextet and has remained part of the trio since 1984. Beyond those roles he has recorded one date for Sunnyside in 1988 and released two albums on his own JKNM imprint.
