Avion never ranked among Australia’s most notable or fondly recalled rock acts, yet the band still managed to issue a pair of polished major-label records during the mid-70s. Assembled in Sydney in 1983, the lineup featured three brothers along with Randall Waller on vocals and guitar, Martin Tode on guitar, Evan Murray on keyboards, Kendall Waller on bass, and John Waller on drums. Their first release arrived that October in the form of the single “Never Let Me Go.” Roughly twelve months afterward came their self-titled debut album, whose melodramatic AOR textures and straightforward lyrics attracted little commercial attention. Following that record the personnel shifted when Paul Gannel took Tode’s guitar spot, and the group moved from RCA Records to a fresh deal with EMI Records. The next eighteen months clearly sharpened their approach. White Noise appeared, featuring the singles “Berlin Wall” and “Ships,” but its more thoughtful compositions produced no reversal in the band’s fortunes. EMI soon ended the arrangement.
