Originating in Reykjavík, Iceland, the alternative pop trio aYia first drew notice through the singles “Ruins” and “Sparkle.” Fronted by singer, songwriter, and poet Ásta Fanney Sigurðardóttir, the group formed in 2016 after Ásta began sharing her solo work with musicians across the country. Strong creative rapport quickly emerged with two of the producers she encountered, prompting the three to establish a band and commence writing and recording together. Their music blends seductive, atmospheric layers built from euphoric synths, angelic vocals, and driving electro rhythms. Early recognition arrived when the debut single “Water Plant” appeared on Bedroom Community in 2016. That December the trio presented additional material during a KEXP broadcast. Subsequent releases arrived at irregular intervals as the members concentrated on refining their stage performance, which included appearances at the Iceland Airwaves and Sónar Reykjavík festivals throughout 2017; during this period they also issued “Ruins” and “Sparkle.” In 2018 aYia supported Icelandic techno outfit GusGus on a European tour and headlined three concerts of their own in the Republic of Ireland. Their self-titled debut LP followed later the same year.
