Blending Middle Eastern methods and instrumentation with English-language singing, electric guitar, bass, and prog rock elements defines Azigza's sound. Multi-instrumentalist Aryeh Frankfurter, who plays electric violin, and fusion guitarist Kevin Evans established the group in San Francisco during the closing years of the 1990s. Additional members included bassist Pierce McDowell, drummer Stephan Junca, Rasaki Aladokun on talking drum—a previous sideman for King Sunny Ade—vocalist Cyoakha Grace, and percussionist Roland Robles, each bringing substantial musical experience. In 1999, the initial pair of demo recordings, titled Lake of Fire and Whose Portals Are Night & Day, appeared as downloads via www.MP3.com, achieving notable success on the platform. These shorter releases, along with extra material, were assembled into the 2000 album Azigza.
