Japanese pianist Azumi Nishizawa has earned recognition for her command of Spanish piano repertoire, appearing regularly as a guest artist at festivals worldwide while presenting recitals and radio broadcasts. Born in Tokyo, she trained at the Toho Gakuen School of Music with Michiko Okamoto and Ikuyo Kamiya. She continued her studies at the Geneva Conservatory of Music under Dominique Merlet and later moved to Madrid to work with Joaquin Soriano. Concert tours have taken her through Japan, Switzerland, France, Italy, and Spain; in 2010 she was awarded the Internet Music International Friendship Prize for these global performances. Festival engagements have included the Société des Arts de Genève, the Festival Chopin in Paris, the Kyoto Music Festival, the Music Festival in Vicenza, Summer Classics in Madrid, the Torreciudad Festival in Huesca, and the International Music and Dance Festival of Ubeda, among numerous others. Nishizawa has also devoted considerable attention to chamber music, performing with members of the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, Cuarteto Assai, trumpeter Jorge Almeida, saxophonist Nobuya Sugawa, and flutist Mariano Martín. Her recording projects have centered on Spanish music, yielding Falla: The Complete Piano Works on Verso in 2011, Albeniz: Iberia on Prometheus in 2014, and Debussy Hommage on IBS Classical in 2018, the last of these featuring works by Albéniz, Mompou, Granados, and Falla. In addition, she has taught as an adjunct professor at Shanghai Normal University and served as an instructor for Yamaha in Spain and Portugal.
