Standing over seven feet tall, the Cape Verdean performer Bana instantly draws notice through sheer physical presence, although his genuine distinction becomes clear only once he begins to sing. Bana entered the music industry during the 1950s as a hugely popular morna singer by shuttling the crippled composer B. Leza from one concert hall to another. Possibly because of that very popularity, he came under accusation of cooperating with the colonial Portuguese government; unable to shed the resulting stigma, he relocated to Europe and established bases in Rotterdam, Paris, and, more recently, Lisbon. In addition to his accomplishments as a singer, Bana took up producing and has applied those skills in work with Cesaria Evora.
