Biography
Formed under the vision of unorthodox hip-hop producer Prince Paul, Baby Elephant unites Paul with his longtime collaborator Newkirk and keyboardist Bernie Worrell, an artist Paul had idolized for years. A devoted admirer of Parliament/Funkadelic since his teenage period, Paul had long sought a direct partnership with the group’s keyboardist and had already drawn on Worrell’s playing in his productions, beginning with the P-Funk fragment he placed on De La Soul’s classic album 3 Feet High and Rising. The pair first connected while promoting the 2005 documentary Stranger: Bernie Worrell on Earth. Their immediate rapport led them to recruit Newkirk, enlist high-profile guests, and start recording the project’s debut album. David Byrne, George Clinton, Nona Hendryx, and Yellowman all contributed to the eccentric Turn My Teeth Up!, released in September of 2007.
