In 1993 the quartet that would later shorten its name assembled in Sweden as Backfish Blue, with Kathrine Bergström on vocals and guitar, Anna Wallmark handling bass, Nina Åkerlund behind the drums, and Linda Åkerlund covering guitar and vocals. Their original goal was simply to knock out the occasional catchy pop song during downtime at home. A demo and a quick tour across Sweden in 1994 triggered a bidding war among labels that A West Side Fabrication ultimately won. The band then adopted the slightly altered name Backfish, at which point David Johnson replaced the original drummer and Elin Bohlin came aboard on guitar. With the lineup finally settled, Backfish delivered its debut full-length, It's Emily, in 1996.

The following year, ahead of a European tour, Evelina Orn took over guitar duties from Erin Bohlin while Anna-Lena Norrbin joined on keyboards. The single “How to Be a Friend” surfaced in 1998 just as tinnitus forced David Johnson to exit. Patrik Sundqvist stepped in immediately, allowing the band to finish its Finland dates and record the Fashion Mania EP before the year ended.
