Born in 1902 and passing in 1968, Bade Ghulam Ali Khan ranked among the outstanding singers of the twentieth century. He counted as a principal exponent of the Patiala gharana, whose seat lay in a onetime princedom now contained within the Indian state of Punjab, a lineage long celebrated for the caliber of its vocalists. The gharana’s distinctive flair and elegance continue through his son Munawar Ali Khan and, by extension, through Ajoy Chakrabarty, who trained with the latter. Regrettably, available catalogue material offers scant representation of his recordings.
