Kathy Baillie, who grew up in New Jersey, first connected with Michael Bonagura in Delaware after an acquaintance handed him a recording that highlighted her singing. Shared admiration for the Four Tops, the Beatles, the Supremes, Linda Ronstadt, and James Taylor helped them craft tight vocal blends both in performance and in private life, leading to their marriage in 1977. Bassist Alan LeBoeuf, a friend of Bonagura’s, soon completed the lineup. Following several seasons working the Garden State club scene, another acquaintance—a driver for Allied Van Lines—invited the three musicians along on a Nashville run. They remained in Music City, where 1982 brought their initial studio credit as backing singers on Ed Bruce’s “My First Taste of Texas.” Bonagura later co-wrote Marie Osmond’s single “There’s No Stopping Your Heart,” and the trio supplied harmonies on releases by Dan Seals and Randy Travis. The group ultimately joined RCA Records and issued its first album in 1987. After finishing their second project, LeBoeuf found the road schedule unsustainable and departed; Baillie and Bonagura kept the original moniker Baillie & the Boys despite its now-inaccurate implication.
