Bailter Space, the noise rock outfit spearheaded by ex-Gordons guitarist Alister Parker, took shape in Christchurch, New Zealand during 1987. Its original lineup featured Hamish Kilgour—formerly of the Clean and Great Unwashed—on drums, Pin Group veteran Ross Humphries on bass, and Glenda Bills also handling drums. Later that year the band delivered its first release, the EP Nelsh, via the Flying Nun label; Humphries and Bills exited shortly afterward, clearing the way for former Gordons bassist John Halvorsen to join ahead of the 1988 album Tanker. A tour ensued, yet Kilgour left permanently once the Clean regrouped, with Brent McLachlan—likewise a Gordons drummer—stepping in as replacement.

Even with the Gordons’ core personnel restored, Bailter Space operated as an independent unit whose sound proved denser and more imposing than their earlier project. The trio resurfaced with Thermos in 1990 and undertook a Northern Hemisphere tour the following year. The EP The Aim arrived in 1992, followed in 1993 by Robot World, their most acclaimed release to that point. Continued productivity brought Vortura in 1994 and Wammo in 1995, after which output tapered during the second half of the decade, producing the Turnbuckle albums Capsul in 1997 and Solar.3 in 1999. In 2004, while the group remained on an extended hiatus, Flying Nun issued a self-titled compilation. Eight years elapsed before Strobosphere appeared on Arch Hill in 2012, succeeded by Trinine on Great Britain’s Fire Records label in October 2013.
