Balkan Beat Box centers on a shifting roster of players anchored by Ori Kaplan and Tamir Muskat, both born in Israel and residing in New York. The group’s music fuses Mediterranean currents with strains from Eastern European folk forms, Middle Eastern traditions, and New York’s electronica landscape.

Before launching the project, each musician had already logged time across multiple unconventional outfits. Kaplan, the saxophonist, moved to the United States to concentrate on jazz yet quickly gravitated toward the immigrant-fueled underground, linking up with Gogol Bordello and comparable acts. Muskat, handling percussion, performed with Firewater and developed production techniques—later deployed within Balkan Beat Box—through collaborations that included work with Gogol Bordello.

In 2005 the band issued its self-titled debut on JDub Records, a label devoted to Jewish music in all its varieties, aided by bassist Itamar Ziegler, trombonist Dana Leong, and MC/percussionist Tomer Yosef. The release cemented their presence in New York’s underground. Their next album, Nu Med, followed in 2007 and drew additional contributions from guitarist Jeremiah Lockwood, trumpeter Ben Holmes, and saxophonist Peter Hess.

Subsequent releases—Black Eyed Black Boy in 2010, Give in 2012, and Shout It Out in 2016—folded in elements of EDM, reggae, cumbia, and hip-hop while extending the group’s established pan-global aesthetic.
