Biography
Although still relatively recent in the landscape of European symphonic groups, the Bamberger Symphoniker, also known as the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra, maintains longstanding ties to its Bavarian home, where roughly one in ten local residents holds subscriptions to at least one of its concert series.
The ensemble originated in 1946 under the name Prague Deutsche Philharmonie, the German orchestra that had operated in Prague during the Nazi occupation. Following the expulsion of German citizens from Czechoslovakia after the war, the musicians regrouped in Bamberg first as the Bamberg Musicians' Orchestra before adopting the Bamberger Symphoniker designation shortly afterward. Joseph Keilberth laid its essential foundations as the first permanent principal conductor, assuming the position in 1949 and continuing until his death in 1968, which occurred while he was leading a performance of Wagner's Tristan und Isolde. James Loughran became the next permanent conductor only in 1979, after which the roster has included just four successors: Horst Stein, Witold Rowicki, Jonathan Nott, and Jakub Hrusa, the latter taking up the role in 2016. This pattern of stable, long-term leadership has helped shape the orchestra's distinctive sonic profile.
The Bavarian state government provides partial funding, and the group bears the formal designation Bayerische Staatsphilharmonie, or Bavarian State Philharmonic, while remaining central to musical activity in Bamberg itself. Beyond regional duties, it has delivered more than 7,000 concerts across 500 cities in 63 countries, functioning more extensively than other major Bavarian orchestras as an ambassador for the state. The ensemble has made its Bamberg home at the Konzert- und Kongresshalle since 1993. During the 1980s and 1990s it recorded for Orfeo, Vox, and Koch Schwann, later concentrating primarily on the Tudor and CPO labels in the 2000s. It has welcomed distinguished guest conductors such as Herbert Blomstedt and Neeme Järvi, the latter with whom it released a complete cycle of Glazunov symphonies in 2019.
