Biography
Bang! Bros. operate as a Boston-rooted ensemble that channels free jazz improvisation through electronic means. Arkm Foam and Mark Johnson form the central pair, generating densely chaotic and abrasive live sets solely with drum machines, samplers, pedals, and tape decks while avoiding any sequencing or programming. Saxophonist Andy Allen, previously a member of Guerilla Toss, frequently augments these performances, heightening the skronk within the duo’s unbound machine-driven explorations. Their catalog includes the 2016 release Food for Thoth along with the ongoing, multi-volume Hard Rocks series.
The ensemble originated in Boston during 2012 and promptly commenced both live appearances and a steady stream of cassette issues in the Hard Rocks series via Moss Archive and Teen River. On December 12, 2012, Bang! Bros. delivered twelve short concerts across twelve separate towns; the resulting document, titled 12/12/12, surfaced through Feeding Tube Records and 100% Breakfast! in 2014. Food for Thoth marked the trio’s debut on Hausu Mountain that same year. Feeding Tube issued Hard Rocks Vol. 21—an LP captured in under an hour—in 2018, while Hausu Mountain brought out the two-volume Big Bang! Theory, laid down in a single morning session, in 2019.
