Originating in Lansing, the capital of Michigan, Bantam Rooster adopted a stripped-down guitar-and-drums format that echoed the spare sound of 1960s garage rock captured on makeshift, duct-taped gear. T. Jackson Potter on guitar and vocals joined forces with drummer Eric Cook in 1994 while both musicians had downtime from their regular groups; the partnership soon generated repeated performances across the Mid-West and led to a contract with Crypt Records in 1996. That year also saw the release of their debut 7" EP, Miss Luxury, while their first full-length album, Deal Me In, appeared in 1997 and was followed by a European tour. After returning to the United States and issuing another 7" via Ypsilanti's Flying Bomb Records, the duo unveiled their second album, The Cross and The Switchblade, in 1999, with Fuck All Y'All arriving the following year.
