Biography
Barbara Cue originated not as an individual but as a five-piece supergroup assembled in Athens, Georgia, during 1997 by musicians united through their shared enthusiasm for NRBQ. Blending country, blues, rock, and R&B, the ensemble reflects that influence without resorting to imitation. Its lineup draws from experienced players who have performed with 6 String Drag, Widespread Panic, Star Room Boys, and Drive-By Truckers.
Early on, the musicians convened for local performances in Athens and conducted remote sessions with producer and artist David Barbe of Sugar and Mercyland, later refining the material at his Chase Park Transductions facility. Coordinating appearances proved difficult, since they could occur only when everyone was available and free from commitments to their primary projects. Eventually the collective committed to a full-length release, resulting in Louisiana Truckstop. The album mixed original compositions from the members with joint efforts alongside additional singer-songwriters and included a rendition of NRBQ’s “Little Floater.”
In 2004 the participants regrouped at Chase Park Transductions to complete a follow-up, Rhythm Oil, consisting of ten fresh tracks written by the band and their associates.
