Biography
Barbara Lyon entered the world on 9 September 1931 in Los Angeles as the daughter of screen luminaries Ben Lyon and Bebe Daniels, performers who had launched their careers during the silent era yet sustained momentum throughout the 1930s. Shortly before World War II the family relocated permanently to Britain, where they created a fast-paced family comedy act performed under the title Hi Gang. The 45-minute program featured the Lyons portraying versions of themselves, complete with rapid-fire banter, jokes, musical interludes and sporadic celebrity visitors, and included both Barbara and her younger brother Richard.
In November 1950 the format evolved into the radio sitcom Life With The Lyons, in which Barbara portrayed an adolescent navigating typical early-1950s crises; her recurring exclamation “I’ll die….I’ll just die” soon entered national conversation. The series generated two theatrical spin-offs, Life With The Lyons and The Lyons In Paris, before transferring to television in 1957 as the first situation comedy to make that transition. Shifting audience preferences led to cancellation three years later.
Parallel to her broadcasting work, Lyon secured a Columbia Records contract after appearing in a Blackpool summer production. Her debut single, Stowaway, reached number 12 in the middle of 1955, while her only other chart entry, Letter To A Soldier, arrived at Christmas 1956. A singing career of limited commercial reach prompted a brief 1956 television vehicle, Dream Time With Barbara, which ended quickly. She married the program’s producer Russell Turner, though the union proved short-lived. Scattered television guest spots followed in the early 1960s, among them appearances on McHales Navy and My Three Sons.
After Bebe’s death in 1971, Ben returned to the United States, remarried, and passed away in 1979. Barbara withdrew from public view and, beset by declining health, suffered a fatal brain haemorrhage at age 63 on 10 July 1995 inside a Middlesex residence.
