Biography
Having roots in Rwanda before being raised in Brussels and later making her home in Berlin, Barbara Panther brings a personal history every bit as varied as the music she creates. Merging experimental electronic textures with her commanding and soulful voice, she delivers a style that engages the senses on multiple fronts, repeatedly redirecting listeners’ focus as they grapple with its unconventional character. Although prior work with Kid606 and Jahcoozi had already shaped her trajectory, her most consequential partnership arose while preparing her first solo effort. Joining forces with producer Matthew Herbert, whose résumé already included sessions with Björk, R.E.M., and Yoko Ono, she assembled her bold self-titled album, issued in 2011 on City Slang.
