Biography
Once half of the Irish quartet B*Witched that dominated the late 1990s, twin sisters Keavy and Edele Lynch resurfaced nearly ten years later as Barbarellas, swapping their familiar denim-clad tomboy and bubblegum teenybopper image for a sexier look and an electro-pop sound reminiscent of Lady Gaga. The Dublin-born pair, whose 1979 arrival placed them in a household that also included brother Shane Lynch of Boyzone, received early encouragement to develop their creative skills; by age 16 they were already teaching dance at a local academy before enlisting two friends to launch the girl group B*Witched. Under the guidance of producer Ray Hedges they secured a 1997 contract with Glowworm Records, and within twelve months their debut single “C’est la Vie” reached the top of the U.K. charts, initiating a two-year run of success that made them the first act to enter at number one with each of their first four singles while also yielding two Top Five albums, a Billboard Top Ten hit, and opening slots for *NSYNC and Britney Spears.
Following B*Witched’s official 2002 disbandment, Edele collaborated with the Xenomania team on songs for Girls Aloud (“Some Kind of Miracle”) and Sugababes (“Situation’s Heavy”), whereas Keavy established the songwriting and production facility Ziiiing!. The sisters reunited in 2006 for a series of university and nightclub dates billed as Ms. Lynch, then spent the next four years refining a more mature style that ultimately became Barbarellas. With former Sony chairman Paul Burger now managing them, they unveiled the project at the 2010 Miss Ireland ceremony, recorded their debut album alongside producer Yoad Nevo (Pet Shop Boys, Duran Duran), and, after supporting Boyzone on its U.K. tour, issued Night Mode in 2011.
