Biography
Barnett & Coloccia unites two standout figures from American experimental music: Faith Coloccia of Mamiffer and Alex Barnett of Oakeater. Both musicians maintain extensive careers outside the duo, whether through joint efforts or solo endeavors. Barnett, who has already partnered with Mammifer and Locrian, launched an active solo trajectory in 2009 that yielded multiple releases on labels such as Catholic Tapes, Nihilist, and DRAFT. Coloccia, for her part, co-operates the SIGE imprint alongside her husband Aaron Turner—who also forms the other half of Mammifer—and has joined forces with Boris, House of Low Culture, and Daniel Menche. Rather than exchanging files across the great distance between them, the pair chose to convene in person for Barnett & Coloccia. Their initial three-day session took place at Vancouver’s Otic Sound studio, after which additional mixing occurred at Seattle’s AVAST! studio, producing the project’s first full-length, Retrieval. The recording weaves together noise, electronic, and psychedelic components. Blackest Ever Black issued the album toward the end of 2013.
