Amid the downturn of South African jazz in the 1970s and '80s, Barney Rachabane stood out among the scant musicians who sustained active careers. He not only fronted his own ensemble but also joined Hugh Masakela for a sequence of Technobush recordings and captured material while touring with Paul Simon.
Rachabane has occupied a leading position in South African jazz since the 1960s, when he appeared in multiple groups with drummer Early Mabuza and laid down tracks with jazz pianist Abdullah Ibrahim.
