German DJ and electronic musician Barnt crafts club tracks that balance precision with open-ended exploration, drawing equally from kosmische traditions, minimalist approaches, house, and techno. As co-founder of the Magazine label and participant in the supergroup Cologne Tape, his recorded work features underground club staples such as the 2010 single What Is a Number, That a Man May Know It? and the 2014 track His Name, alongside the full-length Magazine 13 issued the same year. Long associated with the Cologne techno institution Kompakt, he has worked directly with its co-founder Michael Mayer and assembled one volume of the label’s Connecting the Dots compilation series in 2023.

Daniel Ansorge, resident in Cologne, launched Magazine in 2010 alongside co-founders Jens-Uwe Beyer and Crato. The imprint’s debut offering was Cologne Tape’s Render, an abstract recording that included Ansorge and Beyer together with Kompakt-affiliated artists Jörg Burger and Axel Willner (The Field). Barnt’s subsequent What Is a Number, That a Man May Know It? quickly gained traction across the club underground. The 2012 Magazine release Is This What They Were Born For? was followed by additional 12"s on Mule Musiq, Cómeme, and Nachtdigital. In 2014 his well-received remix of C.P.I.’s “Proceso” surfaced, succeeded later that year by the taut, halting His Name EP and the wide-ranging album Magazine 13. The 2015 remix 12" Magazine 131 preceded his 2016 joint full-length & with Michael Mayer, while the 2017 Holger release If She Says She Is a Healer, She Is a Healer divided its attention between ambient and club material.

Barnt inaugurated the Schalen label via the 2019 EP High Hopes and Local Fame. His initial Kompakt outing arrived in 2022 with the trance-oriented ProMetal Fan Decor Only Product, followed in 2023 by the Mayer collaboration Speicher 125 and another contribution to the retrospective Connecting the Dots series.
