Biography
In December 2011 the Raleigh, North Carolina quartet Barren Girls assembled after guitarist and vocalist Carla Wolff decided to launch an all-girl garage punk outfit. Having previously performed with drummer Ash Van Eijk in Lazy Janes, Wolff invited Van Eijk into the new group and brought keyboardist Jenny Williams aboard to complete the original trio. Bassist Fran Araya joined following several months of rehearsals, allowing Barren Girls to deliver a combination of blistering punk and nihilistic garage throughout their hometown. An appearance at the 2012 Hopscotch festival prompted the band to sign with Merge Records, after which they completed a home-recorded EP in early 2013 while also laying groundwork for a full-length planned for release at a later date.
