Anthoney J Hart, operating out of London, channels his pirate radio background into lean yet rhythmically intricate club music through the Basic Rhythm alias. The name overlaps with a little-known breakbeat hardcore outfit from the early '90s, and the productions reference jungle, garage, and grime while refusing to lock into any single template. Alongside his own Basic Rhythm catalog, highlighted by 2021's Electronic Labyrinth, he has also delivered numerous DJ mixes that trace the timeline of early-'90s U.K. hardcore and jungle in sequence.

Born in Hastings in 1979, Hart absorbed the rave scene as a formative influence before shifting toward experimental work shaped by noise, musique concrète, and the bleaker edges of drum'n'bass under the Imaginary Forces moniker. Releases under that project appeared on Ohm Resistance, Fang Bomb, and Halcyon Veil during the 2010s. Circling back to earlier roots, he started crafting sharp, ecstasy-charged cuts as Basic Rhythm, beginning with the Raw Trax album on Type in early 2016. The Slewage EP and 2017 album The Basics arrived next.

At the start of 2018, Hart's grime outlet East Man issued its debut album Red, White & Zero on Planet Mu. Later that year, Basic Rhythm's Dough Boy 12" came out on Arcola, the revived Warp sublabel. New Style EP followed on Sneaker Social Club in March 2019. Basic Rhythm's third album, On the Threshold, appeared on Planet Mu shortly afterward, with the label also releasing the 2 Da Core EP before the year closed. Further singles surfaced on Sneaker Social Club and Raw Basics, after which Basic Rhythm rejoined Planet Mu for the 2021 full-length Electronic Labyrinth. The project's last outing on that imprint, the 2022 EP Cool Down the Dance, centered on tear-out jungle.
