Biography
The Baskervilles operate as an upbeat, fizzy indie pop outfit whose style draws from new wave and bubblegum pop while echoing the Ladybug Transistor and the Shermans. Rob Keith and Laura Taylor launched the project in Tampa, FL, during 1993; the lineup later grew to incorporate bassist Tom Gagnier and drummer Christoph Gerozissis, who was succeeded by Craig Van Orsdale in 1995. Further shifts followed, as Taylor departed in 1996 and Keith relocated the remaining members to New York the next year. Gerozissis returned in 1998, switching to bass, while vocalist Stephanie Finucane joined at the same time.
Once stabilized, the group spent the ensuing years performing regularly around New York, laying down tracks in 2000 that formed their self-titled debut. Those recordings appeared on the band’s website in early 2003, where they reached Secret Crush Records founder Gregg Weiss. Produced by Mitch Easter, the album surfaced on the label in spring 2004, followed by the Midnight EP in 2005. Early the next year the band assembled four tracks intended for a Swedish EP that ultimately fell through, so they instead offered the songs as free downloads on their site. The members chose to sustain momentum by issuing limited-edition singles each month throughout the subsequent year; each featured artwork from a different contemporary artist, among them Wilhelm Sasnal and Lothar Hempel, under the banner of the Twilight 14 Project. The collected singles later appeared as the band’s third album, Twilight, which arrived in summer 2008.
