Biography
Hollywood, Florida-based trio Beach Day came together after Kimmy Drake on guitar and vocals, Natalie Smallish on bass and vocals, and Skyler Black on drums crossed paths while performing with three separate bands at the same show and chose to combine their efforts into a new project. Their punky, surfy spin on classic girl group style quickly drew favorable attention, leading to a deal with Kanine Records during summer 2012. The group issued its first single, “Beach Day,” that July and followed with “Walking on the Streets” in November. Jim Diamond, known for work with the White Stripes and Dirtbombs, handled the mixing of the debut album Trip Trap Attack, which appeared in June 2013. Following nearly a year of touring and a reduction to the duo of Drake and Black, the pair traveled to Jim Diamond’s Ghetto Recorders studio in Detroit to record the follow-up. Native Echoes arrived in August 2014 with a more streamlined and forceful sonic approach.
