Formed in Melbourne, Australia, the neo-psych indie rock outfit Beaches issued their debut LP through Mistletone Records in 2008. The lineup of Antonia Sellbach on guitar and vocals, Alison Bolger on guitar and vocals, Ali McCann on guitar and vocals, Gill Tucker on bass and vocals, and Karla Way on drums and vocals pulls from sources that include '60s psych pop, '90s shoegaze, Flying Nun dream pop, and German drone rock. That record earned a spot on the Australian Music Prize short list and established the group’s trajectory. They visited the U.S. on two separate tours, appeared at All Tomorrow’s Parties in 2009, and delivered the EP Eternal Sphere via Mexican Summer in 2010. Chapter Records put out the follow-up album She Beats in 2013, which included guitar contributions from Neu!’s Michael Rother. The band spent the subsequent years refining material through extended rehearsals at their Melbourne space before Chapter released the resulting 17-track set Second of Spring in September 2017.
