Beangrowers, a pop/rock trio from the Mediterranean island of Malta, assembled in the mid-'90s after a fan supplied their name moments before an early show. Ian Schranz on drums and synth first connected with Mark Sansone on bass and synth as children at church, after which mutual acquaintance Alison Galea joined on vocals and guitar. While still teenagers the musicians auditioned several fourth members before committing to a permanent trio format. Their earliest demos wove in audio fragments from vintage sci-fi films and computer-generated tones. A brief 1997 German tour yielded a recording contract with Rough Trade Germany. The band issued 48k in June 1999 and followed it with the self-titled Beangrowers in 2001. In March 2004 they traveled to the United States to perform at the South by Southwest Music Festival in Texas, and later that year Dance Dance Baby was released.
