Biography
Under the Beastie Respond alias, Copenhagen native Tobias Pedersen fashions an elusive fusion that incorporates drum'n'bass, electro-funk, footwork, trap, and assorted further strains. His productions mirror both the relentless data overload of the current age and a yearning for earlier conceptions of tomorrow, yielding sounds that shift between the taut suspense of a John Carpenter soundtrack and the buoyant, fluorescent pulse of a Rustie record. After drumming in his early years and performing with a reggae/ska group, Pedersen grew compelled to merge unrelated genres and therefore began issuing solo electronic material as Beastie Respond. Once he had refined his approach across several years, he joined the Danish imprint Teal Records in 2010. The debut single “Syncopy” surfaced in 2011, accompanied by a remix from techno producer Blawan. “Be Quiet” and “Dreams and Reality” appeared the following year, at which point experimental drum'n'bass figures such as dBridge and Loxy took notice and placed Beastie Respond cuts on their own outlets, Exit Recordings and CX Digital. Closer to synthwave than to drum'n'bass, the first Beastie Respond album Fictitious Nostalgia emerged on Teal in 2013. Apart from occasional remixes and compilation spots, Pedersen remained largely inactive until the Back to the Future EP surfaced on Circle Vision in 2016. One year afterward, Foul-Up issued the exuberant full-length Information City.
