Producer Neil Case operates under the pseudonym Beat Dominator and ranks among the foremost creators in bass music, the hip-hop variant built around the generation of subsonic bass frequencies. His career began as a DJ in his native Jamaica, where the low-end content of the records he played first captured his attention. He later took a position as assistant engineer at Kingston's Dynamic Sound Studios, collaborating there with reggae legends Jimmy Cliff and Peter Tosh while mastering the technical demands of studio work. After spending years at the console in Dynamic, he relocated to Miami and began issuing homemade bass mixes composed entirely of his own tracks. He recorded under the Beat Dominator alias for the first two years before adopting the more fitting Bass Mekanik name in 1994. The earlier alias had already left such a strong impression that he kept issuing albums under it as well. A partnership with Keith Rosenberg on the Bass Inc. project initially helped separate the identities of the two monikers, yet an early effort to steer Beat Dominator toward a more techno-oriented sound ultimately left the two projects indistinguishable by the late '90s. Following a consistent output of bass albums throughout the '90s under the Beat Dominator name, Case appears to have discontinued the alias upon launching www.BassMekanik.com, the record label and website that handles his Bass Mekanik releases.
